Gaining experience points is so bad, the only optimal way to get xp is watching a tutorial on how to build a mob farm that you have no idea how it works, copying it exactly and than AFKing for hours. IMO gaining xp should should be made of actually fun activities and actually playing the game.
This is ruining the game a lot considering xp is required for enchanting

Mining/caving
Ores now drop much more xp
Lapis: is more common exposed (in caves) and much rarer unexposed (rarer while strip mining) to reward the player with lapis after fighting with monsters and to make it a good source of xp as quartz (and also drops less lapis item since it drops like 5 without fortune)

Exploring
Xp bottles now spawn in structure (they are now also buffed since they are slow as hell, also nerf buying them from cleric) OR make structures spawn larger xp bottles inside

Building
Placing down blocks now has a 0.1% chance of giving you a bit of xp (because there is no way of differentiating between player actually building or just randomly placing down blocks, the chance is really low and the reward is low overall because we cannot have anyone thinking that placing blocks randomly is a good way to get xp) I am not that sure about this though

Fishing
Just make it drop more xp since it is otherwise dicouraging to spend that much time sitting in a boat and waiting -
Archeology
Now gives a lot of xp since sites are hard to find and brushing everything takes a lot of time
