What if instead of making elytras harder to get or lowering durability, the way to use an elytra was more difficult than simply doing a double jump and firing a rocket.
The idea is to make the elytra only activate upon reaching a certain speed, faster than the player can sprint jump. This way elytras require a setup to be used. The creative build applications of this would be interesting, imagine a huge drop into a cave where at the last second before being impaled by stalactites, the elytra activates you can glide out of the mouth of the cave. This way only more developed areas would be able to accommodate the use of an elytra.
I'm not sure how the exact mechanics of it would work, but i think it would be interesting if the elytra automatically activates once the necessary speed was reached, instead of by player input, but after the initial activation, it would function as it does now able to close on player input, however, to reopen the elytra in the air would require the player re-achieving the required speed. So be careful not to stop mid-flight! I think a good speed for this would be slightly faster than terminal velocity, so it will require some player ingenuity to achieve the necessary speed. Perhaps a tnt player launcher, or an ice highway. Or maybe a new item or block that would help achieve this, similar to the wind charge.
