So fast travel would be amazing to have as a possibility in Minecraft. Perhaps most importantly, it would be more feasible to play on the same world after a major update, without having to worry about being in new areas too far away from spawn. However, it shouldn't be easy to use, or else it would ruin progression and make other forms of travel pointless. That's why using maps and beacons would be a fantastic way to limit fast travel, while also adding value to the map making system that's already in the game!
So, here's the idea: You can fast travel by interacting with a placed map. You can only teleport to a beacon contained in a revealed area on the map.
There are few details to emphasize. Firstly and most importantly, you would need a beacon, which limits fast travel to being more of an end-game travel option. Next, having to interact with a placed map means that you can't just teleport from a menu whenever you want. You could carry a map with you to use, but since you have to place it, it would be a one-way use. There's also the fact that you would have to reveal the mapped area for the beacon. The silver lining is that you would only have to reveal an area once, since you can copy maps.
To set up two-way teleportation, you would need to travel with a copy of your first beacon's map, a second beacon to place, and a blank map to reveal the area around the second beacon.
I'm out of space to type, but I have other ideas to limit/alter fast travel, which I'll comment below
