Outside of the netherite upgrade, Mojang seems to want armor trims to be purely visual. The Minecraft community, however, seems to want armor trims to have an effect. Thus, I present: the Illusion Armor Trim! (It's a compromise!)
Illusion works with any armor, but not with the normal trimming materials. Instead, it uses leather, chains, iron ingots, gold ingots, diamonds, and netherite ingots. It makes the armor function like the type it actually is, but look like the type of material you chose. This makes it great in PvP, such as making armor seem weaker than it actually is. (Also, I can already see there being internet jokes about netherite armor trimmed to look like leather)
I'm not exactly sure how the Illusion armor trim could be obtained, but probably something to do with Illusioners, whether it's a drop or loot in a structure they spawn in.
