I think players being able find full depictive designs, similar to paintings (1x2, 2x2 or bigger), by assembling stained glass shards found on archeological sites, or other places, would be a great implementation to the archeology system.
Different from a pot, you have to figure out the actual design yourself, which fits with the puzzling and delicate gameplay style archeology requires.
Having a more complex composition can really enhance the ambience and make the player think how much of a stranger he is to that world. I also like to see the new artists being hired for the discs and paintings, so maybe it would be fair to get someone that has a speciality with that craftsmanship too. (I don’t know anyone, I just genuinely think it’s nice you guys do that!).
So, let’s say you completed the design, break it with your fist, the entire frame drops, you can place it wherever you want, good. Break it with a tool, the individual shards will drop. Now, if you break one of the individual shards with a tool you'll lose it, but, again, with your fist, it drops. It’s framed glass after all, right?
It would make sense to find them on villages, buried, or/and on “church” chests.
Perhaps, having damaged ones to be completed, as a hint for players? Maybe on a nether fortress? Yes! Potential for gothic aesthetic!
The designs could be slightly extended, but only with FRAMED GLASS PANES that you place around it (new block?) : o
This would be useful to place them on larger frames.
