Levels that have been present on minecraft for a long time only serve to enchant books or other items via the spell table and anvil.
In my opinion, to improve the experience of the game and increase the customization of the character it would be useful to enter skill points that can be spent in various ways improving maybe the speed of the character, the strength, which would be fine with the famous update combat.
The level system could also be implemented for pets traveling with you allowing:
-Increased horse speed and jumping (which usually sucks if not spawned by commands)
-Increase in attack and life for dogs and also could be managed through an interface with which mode to attack the enemy or which enemies to attack or, as is very often necessary, decide not to make them fight, and therefore away from combat, because of their little life.
-Increased cat repulsion radius for creepers
And more.
You might even decide to implement a minimum level necessary for the use of a certain weapon or armor, thus pushing the player to make levels to progress in the game.
