Before I begin, let me tell you a short story. I recently had the chance to play Minecraft Beta for the first time, and it was certainly an experience.
When I spawned in, right from the get-go the word felt bigger, more imposing, despite having far less advanced terrain generation than modern versions. After getting some wood, I set a mountain as my destination.
In the mountain, I found a cave. It got much darker in there than a modern cave would, and I felt a sense of intrigue. I went inside, lighting it with torches as I went.
Now, this was one of the parts that got me most. I found a skeleton, and I actually felt a genuine pang of fear when it shot an arrow, however small the fear iwas. The angle the arrow was shot at, the sound—it all felt more solid. I fled, but died when I decided to come back later.
I was pretty far away, so I decided to save and quit. But then I saw the sky.
The moon was familiar, but the stars were much different then I remembered. They were bigger, brighter, and more there, even though they were only squares. I watched them until sunrise, despite usually not having the patience for that sort of thing.
Proposal
All that was to make this point: Beta Minecraft, despite not having as many features and bells and whistles as modern Minecraft, was generally more playable and more fun. Keep in mind I played it once for maybe half an hour. I believe Mojang should look at what made Beta so great then and apply it now.
