When an item finally breaks, it should not disappear forever, but instead take on a “broken item” state where it can not be used until it is repaired. Additionally, the durability bar should be replaced with a simple visual representation of items at different stages of decay, like a cracked anvil.
This would intuitively balance out the durability system and allow an alternative repair method that doesn’t rely on the desperate need to enchant everything with Mending, and would also open up gameplay possibilities involving collecting and restoring broken items, such as a powerfully enchanted broken sword found in a loot chest.
The current durability bar is quite a messy, antiquated UI to look at tacked onto all of our items and I find that it is a missed opportunity for a more immersive and aesthetically pleasing system.
I also think that items disappearing when broken is more of an irritation than it enhances anything about the gameplay, and is another missed opportunity for a much more balanced and fun system of saving or collecting broken items and bringing them back from the dead.
