I'm unsure if this is the general consensus in the Minecraft Community but Durability as a mechanic is relatively outdated for Minecraft and the way people play nowadays. Maybe it was important in earlier versions, but right now as the game has evolved it's become invalidated and not impactful as a mechanic.
Durability is just a mild inconvenience early-game due to how easily replaceable most if not all early-game tools are. When it comes to later and more expensive tools i feel as if it causes players to not bother using the tools at all, instead just saving them in their back pocket until they can put Mending and Unbreaking on them. Saving the tools for these enchants effectively gives a jarring power spike, not letting players enjoy and thrive through each step of progression.
Mending and Unbreaking invalidate Durability as a mechanic in the later game. The most effective way to fix a tool in Minecraft is enchanting it with Mending and going to a mob grinder. Putting it bluntly and rather extreme, this says to me "the most effective way to play the game is to not actually play the game".
Durability serves no use in minecraft right now. It would be a very big change, but how about we remove it? the game would benefit due to it effectively being a quality of life change, removing the issue of mending and unbreaking being staple enchantments and bandaid fixes on this bigger problem.
