The different types of protection enchantments are currently mutually exclusive, which leads to plain protection being the only one people really use. If they were no longer mutually exclusive, and were instead super expensive to combine, people would might actually use these enchantments in the late game. Plain protection would probably still be the first one people use, but having all four on each piece of armor could become a new late game goal. This could be done by removing the possibility for combinations to be "too expensive" in anvils. For each new protection enchantment you add to your armor, the experience cost would increase by a set amount. For example, if you wanted to add fire protection IV to protection IV, it could cost 30 levels. Then, if you wanted to add blast protection IV to that same piece of armor, it could cost 60 levels, and 90 levels to then add projectile protection IV. It could also require an upgraded anvil, like a netherite anvil. It could be made by either upgrading an anvil in a smithing table or by crafting it with netherite in a crafting table. Considering the cost of this process, the new fully enchanted armor set would become an incredibly late game achievement. It would also mean people would actually use every type of protection.
