Fire is currently very destructive but also pitiful at the same time. It could be made much more impactful without necessarily just destroying everything by giving it new mechanics, such as...
Burning wood will sometimes convert it into 'Scorched wood' that is a dark grey new type of wood set (All wood types have a chance to turn into this except the fire immune wood types ofc) Scorched wood itself is also fire immune so the fire that caused it doesn't instantly destroy it.
Any block burned can convert to 'Ash' which is affected by gravity and piles like snow layers. It communicates that something was burned there if you were not present to see it.
When fire spreads, the new fire could have a lower chance to spread again, which would help it dissipate on its own.
Fire could give off smoke particles like campfires do, but only when burning away blocks (That way the Nether isn't just filled with smoke)
Grass blocks could also be burned by fire (only the top part), converting them to 'Scorched dirt'. With the addition of fire slowly dissipating you wont need to worry about it destroying all grass nearby... (or you could burn large areas of grass on purpose for a war torn effect)
More ways to get rid of fires could be added as well, such as snowballs being capable of smothering flames. New mechanics such as these could make fire a more interesting feature.
