They can also be referred to as shards, but the page says that "shard" tends to refer to pieces of glassware.

^ True.  Shard is perfectly ok when referring to fragments of glass or crystal.  Shard can be used for pottery as well, but archaeologists still use the term 'sherd' when referring to fragmented pottery vessels.

Since this update focuses on the science of archaeology, it would be best to use the scientific term also used.

From Grammarist: A sherd is a broken piece of pottery with edges that are sharp, usually referring to one that is found in an archaeological site. In essence, the words shard and sherd are interchangeable, though the term sherd is favored by archaeologists. Sherd is an abbreviation of the word potsherd, which has been in use since the 1300s. The plural of sherd is sherds.

Personally, I like the term 'potsherd' best.  It is scientifically accurate to the field of archaeology, and it would be less confusing to amateurs or the uninitiated.  Mojang should do this for because it would be a great teaching moment for Minecraft.  A whole generation of players will learn and grow up knowing the difference, not just people in the archaeology field themselves.

I, as a random citizen, believe using strange words in video games is the height of gaming culture.

Why do they pronounce it just different enough to sound weird without even being easily recognizable as a different word?
