Adding the American Chestnut as a tree type would be nice for another wood type, item drops, and raising awareness about a frequently forgotten endangered species that was once a vital part of the eastern US forests.
With any new tree type there has to be wood variants for it. A more decorative carved option would be interesting to differ it from previous wood types.
More importantly, I think item drops from leaf decay offers an opportunity for expanding husbandry and leather use. If leaf decay could drop chestnuts (like oaks drop apples), chestnuts could be fed to certain mobs to heal them, and maybe the player could cook chestnuts to make roasted chestnut that they could eat.
Additionally, chestnuts could be used as an item to alter or upgrade leather armor. Tannins from chestnuts have historically been used in leather tanning, so it would be interesting if chestnuts offered a unique buff to leather armor to make it more useful in early gameplay.
Finally, adding the American chestnut as a rare tree type would be an opportunity to raise awareness about its endangered status. Possibly, the tree could be incorporated as a rare spawn in a larger "old growth oak" biome. Minecraft has done such a great job with this in the past, so I believe the chestnut would be a wonderful opportunity to continue this sort of environmental advocacy.
