Mobs like zombies that can be stuffed with armor should sometime spawn with a trim.

Would love if more than one could be added to an armor piece. I'm thinking up to 6, to match banners.

Add an elytra combinable chest piece with no buffs to allow trims on the chest area when wearing an elytra. Just keep the crafting recipe with template, armor, material and make some kind of chest piece appear with each trim

My previous comment remained pending for approval so I'm making a new one, long story short: it's great you have to explore to get the templates and that makes them special enough. The duplication is way too expensive, not every minecraft player plays 24/7 to have a ton of diamonds to spare. For something purely cosmetic it should be way cheaper (amethyst, gold, just one diamond and more materials as other suggested) and more accessible, especially since this update is for self-expression not every player is going to spend that much time just to decorate their armor so it fails its purpose to those that don’t play all the time.

Seems a little odd that the trim with netherite cost the same as the upgrade. It would make more sense to use netherite scrap for the trim to make it a little cheaper compared to the upgrade

To encourage more armor Variants, the netherite trim should have the same effect as an upgrade to netherite since it costs the same anyway

I think a lot of persons including me would like to see trims on tools too. Anyway, great snapshot !

I think they could include variants of textures for weapons like sword, pick, axe, shovel making templates allow you to give it a different look since the sprites do not have many pixels to decorate. so it would be a good idea to add sprite diversity by applying templates to tools and weapons.

I think if you obtain a full set of non-duplicated amour and wear it (like having all your armor trimmed by coast) then you would obtain a set bonus which would be a small buff like for the coast 3 seconds of dolphins grace upon going into water. This would be quite cool and add a reason to people that aren't all about fashion but are about function to go out and explore and obtain a full set.

Hope this is considered, I have always dreamed of armor trimming in Minecraft.

    Also love the feature!!!

Add mob themed smithing templates to dungeons corresponding to the mob in the monster spawner

Add simple templates with basic or minimalistic trims (just a few pixles) sold by the tool Smith villager for early game players that want to express themselves rather than making all templates end game

The cartographer villager should sell maps that lead to random structures with guaranteed templates as loot

Ancient city loot should include random trimmed armor pieces

To balance the cost of trims compared to the worth of the armor itself, it would be cool if the templates have a durability that gets lowered faster by more expensive armor and remains broken like elytra instead of being consumed. You could use a template once for netherite but multiple times for chain or iron before you have to repair it with 7 diamonds

Elder guardians should spawn in peaceful mode without being hostile like brutes to give peaceful players a chance to obtain the template

Love it, just one thing that I wish was that instead of Redstone trim we had a new ore called ruby and use that instead for the red trim color as it would 1. add a new gem to the game which is awesome and along with that it would make sense and fit in with the gems rather than Redstone dust which sounds more of like a resource that is dust and seems weird as how can a item that is supposed to be a dusty material can be used to make trims. Nevertheless the trims look amazing; it's just a new gem to fit the red trim would be amazing!

It's a good idea but they look kinda ugly on everything but netherrite. I'll admit this part is speculation but if you're intending to include these in archeology eventually I would remove the duplication for all but netherrite. Maybe have the wandering trader have em if people really need them. It might be nice to have different trims do something? I don't know what exactly, maybe gold keeps the piglins from attacking and the others do other things(prob nothing related to combat tho for the sake of keeping it simple)

To explain the new mechanic, books containing some hints could spawn in the new bookshelves randomly

    My thoughts:
They're awesome. I love the idea of decorative elements for armor, it's something that Minecraft has needed for a while now. That being said, I have some critiques, and some feedback.

    • Templates are too expensive. Reducing the cost to 1 diamond instead of 7 and making the recipe shapeless would still be a good cost while making them FAR more worthwhile to copy. Alternatively, they could just be tools, and not be consumed on use.
    • Things that should be considered valid trim materials: blaze rods (fiery orange trim), prismarine crystals (light teal/prismarine trim), echo shards (speckled sculk-colored trim), ender pearls (deep teal trim), and glowstone dust (pale gold trim, glows by default).
    • You should be able to apply glow ink to trimmed armor for an effect similar to the glow squid, glow signs or magma blocks (the trim appears to "glow" in the dark).
    • Some smithing materials should have special effects. For example, gold trim could pacify piglins. Echo shard trim could reduce sculk sensor/warden detection radius. Blaze rod trim could give limited fire immunity. Netherite trim could give a limited amount of armor toughness.
    • Trims need to be also applicable to tools. If each trim makes the tool take on a unique shape and color pattern, all of a sudden there's so many more things for mapmakers and datapack makers to work with. So please, if there's just one feature I could add, it would be "trims on tools". That would be perfect.

Regarding armors: Maybe also consider updating the older armor textures to somewhat match the netherite set? Trims currently look a little odd on the existing sets.

There should be a way to remove trims if you dont want them anymore. Not expecting to get the materials back but it would be a nice small change.

    Answering the specific questions:

    • As of right now it feels a little too challenging for the reward.
    • Yes, absolutely it does. It's fun to go look for them, but there needs to be a better adventuring system rather than just stumbling blindly about.
    • No, it just makes them feel expensive. Instead of a lot of diamonds, each one should use a diamond, a base material, and a gem/crystal/item specific to the "area" the trim is supposed to be from. For example, the Eye trim could use an ender pearl, the Coast trim could use a Heart of the Sea, the Tide trim could use prismarine crystals, etc.
    • Somewhat. If you could allow us to trim an entire set at one time so we could see what the finished set looks like before finalizing, that would be perfect.
    • I love them, but some of them look out of place on the older armor textures (basically everything except netherite). I'd recommend updating most of the armor textures.
    • Yes, absolutely.

Why would I want to waste 7 diamonds copying trim patterns, for iron armor or any armor below diamond level. I don’t think cosmetics is enough justification in that case. I want to save my diamonds for diamond armor, not to make my armor look better. It just feels very late game focused, but when would a late game player want to have any armor that isn’t diamond. I love the idea, but it feels a bit to late game for how little benefit it seems to provide.

Maybe the smithing dupe recipe could be tweaked? It seems like too much material for templates. Either something like 7 of the relevant material block around 1 diamond, or even 1 diamond in the middle and 1 slab of the relevant material below (templates look like slab size, not full blocks).

There should be an nbt tag for a custom color gradient instead of a static type of material

I think something to add to this would be a way to customize tools, so it's easier to tell at a glance, which is a fortune pickaxe and which is a silk touch by way of customization.

I'd love it if there were another item added that can be found in villages at a fairly low rate for a tool handle to be swapped for another wood type and carry its wood colour, and be able to colour it with what is already available, as a hand wrap for the tool.

Additionally, add another plate you can only find within the blacksmith chest, that allows the customization of the pommel/guard of the sword, with the colouring only effecting the pommel, so I could change the sword to a copper pommel/guard with redstone to make the pommel look like it carries a ruby(red).

Another could be the customization of bows in the same way, only having the plate in a chest found in a fletching house to customize the wood colour as well as a hand wrap for the secondary colour.

Love the idea of armour trims, and extending the use of diamond armour so you don't have to just walk into the nether and after an hour, have full netherite armour. Also love the balance of using diamonds to duplicate plates, although having to use 7 diamonds for trim is a bit steep. 7 diamonds for a netherite plate copy makes good sense, though.

Can we keep in mind the utility of making armor to place on armor stands as decoration?

Some of these would look very nice in many builds, Id much rather keep my glut of diamonds and gold for *building*.

These materials arent just currency to trade for other things! We build with diamonds!

Dont make us choose between the two for a rather simplistic cosmetic upgrade.

i really like most things about armor trims. it gives more use for diamonds and lets you customize your stuff. obtaining the current ones feels right. but actually applying it to your armor is not the best, it made my inventory a mess. i want to be able to store templates in the table and apply the trims similar to how banners are with looms.

also i think it would be cool if there were like special unique trims and materials based on the various difficult enemies or stuff that are in the game, stuff that's harder to get but their looks reflect that. for example something like a wither trim and nether star material, dragon trim and breath material, warden trim and skulk like material and or something for piglin brute
