there is also alot of talk about making trims do stuff and I think redstone producing more power the more you wear trimmed with it could be useful for different contraptions (ie. shifting on a line of redstone would make a current spreading from where you stand, opening trapped chests negates activation, and opening hoppers stops items from transfering until closed)

I'm going to answer each question in order with this sign ( • ) just to let you know in advance

    • finding a Smithing Templates is hard but i like it because it's worth the reward afterwards

    • Yes it does feel adventurous to search for Smithing Templates

    • I think the diamond requirements for copying Smithing Templates make them feel more rare than special IMO

    • Does it feel intuitive: no because it's going to take some time to know how which pattern do I want on my armor

    • The armor trims look beautiful

    • Yes but only in creative mode because I got to play around with all the wonderful shapes and colors

It completely depends on each type of player, but I think it's a pretty expensive decoration method for what they are, perhaps adding mini upgrades to each material will balance the difficulty of getting a more beautiful and expressive armor.🦆

I would like to add that the trims should not have extra effects. I have seen some suggestions here that a specific trim or added material should add effects like speed, fireresist or neutrality to piglins, even if it’s a minor effect. And it might sound cool or that it gives it more purpose, But..

One thing that I hate about armor in games is: when I try to make it look good and cool, and look the way I want it to look, but if I do that I lose out on a good effect. So then it becomes a meta that the only good armor trim is the dune trim with gold and then everyone uses only that trim and everyone looks the same again.

It should only be about looks. Then I can make it look the way I want it to look without worrying about the additional effects messing with my artistic expression.

I don't feel that crafting the templates is particularly expensive. If it's to be adjusted at all, it would only be by one or two diamonds less. Once you have a set of diamond armor and tools, you barely have a use for them and they only see significant use with diamond economies on multiplayer. For those who don't have resources, or hate mining, it's good that they have the option of adventuring for more templates. This encourages mixing and matching as well.

With the current setup, I am very glad that the upgrade template is able to be duplicated, because if it didn't, you would have a horrible problem on servers where they would charge exorbitant prices for an item that is for important gameplay progression. Basically, imagine having nether wart that you can't grow more of and could only harvest from a fortress. How often do you think you would find it? People would be more likely to hoard their excess than sell it.

I would love for gold trim to make piglins not attack you as if you where wearing gold armor. You are basically wearing gold so it would be a really cool inclusion

It would be cool to also have prismarine and purpur and maybe even obsidian trims to allow more ways for the materials to match the source biomes of the templates

Since the addition of the netherite I’ve felt like diamonds has no real use more than being a quick stage before one acquires netherite. This snapshot however brought back the importance of diamonds by making them an even more crucial part of the netherite process. Something which I dearly welcome!

patterns should not be consumable, because beyond being too rare and expensive to duplicate for simple cosmetics (and this is even more true in the case of a multiplayer world where several players would like the same rare pattern), and it is good to remember that banner patterns are not consumable, although they are easier to craft.

also valid for the upgrade to netherite armor, which before the snapshot was already long enough to farm (for a solo player not using machines or cheated mechanics)

What if you could have more than one armour trim on the same armour piece 🤔? Also what if we could use a grindstone to remove the armour trims from your armour?

The pattern should also be reproduced on the armor item (within the possibilities offered by the small number of pixels)

I don't necessarily think that the copying templates system is too expensive. After all you can choose to explore to find more and safe the diamonds. However I think it's a bit clunky in its current state. Needing a stone type that's not hard to come by makes it unnecessarily tedious to craft. That's one more item you need to remember, get from a chest or craft and another spot taken up in your inventory.

I think it would be cool to have a trimmed piece of Netherite with gold to prevent piglins to be angry but that will make golden armor useless again. And I feel like if you are in the nether you trade your protection in for not getting attacked bij piglins. I also saw a comment with combining a chestplate and an elytra. It would be cool to have both the protection and the ability to glide but I feel like you have to trade your protection for the ability to glide. But it is really cool to see golden trimmed netherite to not anger piglins...

Diamonds need to be useful again, currently for armor and tools many players use villagers, giving a new and unique use to diamonds will increase their value. I like that a lot.

Many say that gold should pacify the piglins, but if that were the case, people would only use the trims with gold, I like it as it is now.

Elytras, horse armor and shields would have a lot of potential with trims, it would increase the creativity, customization and value of the trims.

Also, good options to add to the list of materials would be echo shards, glowstone, prismarine (although there are already two varieties of blue so it's not so necessary) and I don't know if it's possible, but is it possible to use glow ink somehow? It would be amazing

ok so my problems/ideas with trims here:

    1. 5% chance to find them regardless of structure is brutal (especially in cases like jungle temples and mansions)

    2. The diamond cost of duplicating a trim pattern is stupidly high and does not allow the player to decorate any armor they don't intend to be their main armor it would be too much of a waste of the only non-farmable resource. i think the recipe should be reversed (1 template, 1 diamond in the middle and blocks all around), it would not only make sense from a crafting perspective (since templates are made of a block with a little bi of diamond typically in the middle), but would also allow players to start customizing their armor as soon as they get their first template with no need to save them for their best armor (cause using them on temporary armor would be a waste)

    3. would be nice if elytras got some trims too (and/or other customization) (i am aware capes change elytras but not all players but most players only have 1, which doesn't allow for much customization at all)

    4. Since customization and expression seems to be the theme here, why not allow us to trim horse armor as well? (it would also then make sense to add netherite armor and maybe allow horse armor to be enchanted)

ok so my problems/ideas with trims here:

    5. Shield already have tons of customization with banners, but what if trims also applied (maybe the trim would change the metal part's color and/or slightly frame a shield with a banner and would have abig prominent symbol without a banner (or with a blank banner)

I think the name should be changed from "smithing templates" to "smithing runes"

It's all cool with the templates and the envisioned encouragement to explore. But I'm playing on a console and constantly getting kicked out of my worlds because I am apparently running out of local storage space which I am definitely not (see e.g. bug report MCPE-55010, having 200 gb free space with a total size of all worlds around 1.1 gb). Seems like I and many other won't have the chance to get all template since some require massive exploration (e.g. woodland mansion, exploring in general is totally cool) and the corresponding world size increase. Sad to see this bug not being fixed for years and destroying the joy to explore the new features for many bedrock players... doesn't seem to have any priority...

I think a couple new materials should be able to be added as trims such as echo shards, what would also be cool is if the copper trims oxidised over time which you could prevent by waxing

I think the duping mechanic should be different. I like the idea, the only problem is that it doesn't make sense to trim a full set of iron or gold armor if I have to spend 21 diamonds to duplicate the pattern 3 times, with 24 diamonds I can craft a full set of diamond armor.

I don't know what the solution might be, maybe duplicating the pattern with 7 iron ingots will result in a pattern only applicable to iron armor pieces, doing it with gold ingots would make the pattern only applicable to gold armor pieces, and so on.

If adding an armor pattern I think you should increase the effect of each pattern. will be worth more or less

Many people want to apply the new armor trim to elytra. I think it would be nice but I understand if you want to keep the cape for that. However, I think it looks very odd to have trimmed pants and shoes but then having no trimmable item on your chest when wearung an elytra. Why not adding a chest piece that can be worn with the elytra but only for cosmetic purposes with no buffs. That would allow to visually customize the chest area with trims when wearing an elytra.

Also  would be great if templates don't get consumed but break instead

TLDR: Great feature; getting and using templates could be discouragingly expensive, and the colors could be more balanced in terms of cost.

Armour Trims would be a fantastic feature that add a good, usable way to customize armor. Acquiring templates encourages interested players to explore many different structures while allowing those not keen to continue progression without obstruction.

However, the current implementation seems to be a bit unbalanced. The rarity of these templates along with their high duplication expense will definitely limit experimentation, especially for casual players. Most players who want to dabble in these would probably want/have to wait till end-game. They would not want to "waste" the templates on lower-level armor such as iron and potentially diamond. This, while well-intentioned, is likely to lead to low usage.

Another area of imbalance is the trim colors. The different colors are purely cosmetic and depend highly on players' preferences. It therefore makes little sense to make some colors very cheap (quartz, iron), while others extremely expensive (diamond, netherite). The varying costs cause some colors to be more "exclusive" than others: wouldn't it be better to have all ingredients at a similar cost?

Overall, greatly looking forward to incorporating these changes into a long-term world and hoping for some re-balancing modifications. Huge kudos to the design and dev teams!

I would like if the material which is used to give netherite color to armour is scrap insted of the ingot

I have a town filled with villagers. I’d love a way to utilize these designs with them. Like if I could drop a leather chest plate for them to wear, or if there were a new item like a necklace you could give villagers to wear.

I think it would enhance storytelling. I imagine the designs signifying different guilds, and assigning my townspeople with symbols would be really cool, and enhance my ability to interact with them and better adopt villages as a home.

More relevant comments, I really love this idea. I’d love it if there were a way to utilize the loom in crafting banner designs templates for your armor. That would also make these templates you’ve introduced stand out as like “legendary symbols” as they are only found, where as anyone could wear their personal banner. #Represent
Perhaps the banner design templates would utilize dyes rather than ores, (and maybe only work on leather items) if the ores ever develop behaviors as is suggested a lot here, that would also enhance the decision making and split these items apart from the legendary group.

(Or, instead of armor- maybe you’ll introduce wool clothing. Completely aesthetic with no armor ability but customizable with the loom. Something to wear around the castle and take the armor off for a bit.)

How challenging is it to find Smithing Templates, and is it rewarding?
A: very, my world is many years old and finding new mansions is going to be quite the challenge as it’s a survival world

Does searching the world for Smithing Templates feel adventurous?
A: challenging yes adventurous? It will force me to wish there was a way the trader could sell hints for locations. This one will make them feel rare and special

Do the diamond requirements for copying Smithing Templates make them feel rare or special?
A: not particularly, but I like the push to harvest diamond and have more use for them in crafting.

Does applying armor trims with the redesigned Smithing Table feel intuitive?
A: no comment I play Bedrock with auto craft

How do armor trims look visually?
A: great! But natural texture pack needs armor pixel density changed to help with the effect. I cannot play with the low bit values it hurts my eyes. Perhaps an upgrade to standard pack and a legacy pack for those that just NEED the low pixel count for nostalgia sake?

Are you able to be creative when combining different types of patterns on separate armor pieces?
    A: yes!!!

Add an option to disable "idle player animation". When the arms swing slightly the armor on the arms clips the armor on the chest plate, causing a glitchy ugly flashing effect especially on the ward design.
