I think everyone wouldn't mind having trims of the same ore type from the armor. If anything, it would add texture to the armor in question, without changing the colors.

I think it's an amazing feature and I would love to see similar customization even on tools and swords. Another amazing customization function would be ability to change enchantment glint's color (maybe using some upgraded dye). I think it would add a lot of character to otherwise plain and always identically-looking armor and tool sets.

I like the fact that you have to work to get the trims. I can imagine myself going mining to get some diamonds to finally finish an armor set with pretty trimming. I think Minecraft needs these kind of fun things to work towards.

The diamond for for duplication is fine, but I think it should be reversed, with 7 blocks of the base material and 1 diamond.

Make them apply a little buff to the armor or a little buff when a full set of trims is worn.

This is an amazing feature, but I really dislike how the crafting additional trims works. Mainly because the crafting recipe is very needlessly expensive. Just judging from the chances, these templates are incredibly hard to obtain, I mean ~3% per chest for the Snout template? That's crazy, but its good. I like that they're rare. But then having to spend stacks of diamonds to get multiple of them? It doesn't make much sense, it should be easy to get multiple once you've found one.

So here's how I think it should work:

You can find items called "Empty Smithing Templates" by doing basically anything in the world, they'd be found in almost all chest loot, be gotten from fishing, bartering, trading, etc etc. Like how nametags can't be crafted but you can get them from basically everything other method. Combining an Empty Smithing Template with another template and the related block in the crafting table will duplicate it like it does now. This makes it easy to duplicate the templates once you've gotten one, but also makes you still explore and interact with the world if you want to get lots of Empty Smithing Templates.

Important to note: this should only apply to Trims, not the Netherite Upgrade, that using diamonds makes sense and is okay. I think the amount of diamonds should be less but still.

Tool trims! Allow players to create their custom weapons/tools, like the legendary weapons that are known throughout the world in some well-known movies/shows/books, since there seems to be an emphasis on players creating their own stories in their world!

Add Coal to the list of materials you can trim with, with the color being close to pitch black like the coal block.

Add Echo Shards to the list of materials you can trim with, with the color being dark teal without necessarily adding the specks since that'd probably take some coding finesse and honestly not necessary

Add Netherite Scrap to the list of materials you can trim with, with the color being the same brown used in the item

Trims should apply weak positive potion effect depending on the trip material. For example:

    • Redstone Speed 1
    • Emerald Hero of the village
    • Gold Haste 1
    • Diamond Resistance 1 etc

duplicating the templates is WAY too expensive to me. please make them all cheaper, that many diamonds is way too many... to me that's not worth it, whether if I'm upgrading to netherite or doing the cosmetic trims, it's all too expensive, i say lower the price to 3 diamonds per each template

I think there should be a trim from villagers that is gained through trading with a master armorer, similar to how the cartographer trades the globe banner pattern when it's master rank. Only drawback is that it may become a tossup between the helmet, chestplate, or the trim for the final two trades.

Would an animated or otherwise unique trim color when using a rare item such as a nether star be fitting? I feel like if you go through all of the work to kill the wither and then don't even use the drop to make a beacon, it would be cool to show off your riches with, say, an animated RGB armor trim.
Other possible items that could be used would be the dragon egg (probably not) or some rare loot from ancient cities (obviously you aren't meant to try to kill a warden, so they wouldn't drop anything useful). Even something like a new drop from the ender dragon to show your dedication to killing and resummoning it would be cool.

The methods required for setting up custom trim textures/models seems a bit unintuitive; it's only the first version, and I personally haven't gotten to actually making one yet, but it seems like it would just be easier to store them all as separate textures rather than the existing system using an overlay/hue. I understand it being a problem with file sizes, but it can't possibly be so bad that it warrants such a roundabout way of doing it. I'm glad there's finally a way to make custom worn-armor-model textures without overwriting existing ones, but the system could be made easier. This is kind of a problem for spawn eggs too, in my opinion: it's very difficult to add "new" spawn eggs in datapacks due to the hue getting in the way.

These seriously need to work on swords too. tools or even tridents and bows would be really cool too. bows have felt so left out since forever, only being wooden, I’d love to be able to have a trim on it, or a way to change the base colour too like with dye?

I think there should also be a way to get them besides chests, super rare though like 1in1000 from a wither skeleton etc, so people who’ve explored lots of their world can still get these reasonably just through specific grinding

Suggestion: we need a way to demonstrate extreme wealth with this. So use Nether Stars, for a super gay rainbow trim. Maybe make it a shifting pattern too.

Come on Mojang. We need stats with the upgrades.

Make the templates reusable like banner templates so that theyre more of a reusable schematic for designs and upgrades. make using any template cost xp instead of having to clone a template everytime you want to use one. the netherite upgrade specifically should cost ALOT of xp. but the 7 diamond per template copy is ridiculous and feels like tacked on fake difficulty for a cosmetic change, and 7 extra diamonds per piece of netherite gear which just outlandish.

I feel like most of the trims have no reason to be so expensive. Maybe they can use copper or something more available? If the template costs 6 diamonds per piece it feels useless to use one on iron or gold armor. Or go even further, the aesthetic trims don't need to be consumed or duplicated, having multiple uses and durability before they break. This makes them more valuable and easier to use, rewarding adventuring rather than making players pay a ton of diamonds. In terms of more patterns, I think it'd be nice if the armorsmith could trade for an exclusive one. In terms of more materials, I think that the data pack integrations cover most of them, but glow ink sacs would be a great choice, giving players a way to make glow-in-the-dark armor to help themselves be visible in the dark.

Some of the gold trimmings look a little strange, like they look more like butter than gold.

I'm not a big fan of templates being consumables, a casual might find one of these and use it without knowing they can be duplicated, or I could accidentally use the last one I have left. Would I have to make a new expedition for a simple mistake? that's not fun.
They are also a bit tedious to use. If I wanted to compare different pieces of armor with different templates and colors, as it is currently implemented, I would have to make several duplicates of various templates and spend a lot of diamonds to try various combinations. I'd probably research something I like in creative and then do it in survival, but I'd like to be able to find something that suits me in survival.
I think they should be cheaper to use, it's okay that they're hard to come by, but once I have them, I just want to be able to use them and experiment as much as I want, if you charge me to be creative I'll probably only use them once.

I'm very happy that you want diamonds to have more uses and value again, but I don't think this is the way. Maybe, if you guys really want to introduce a cost per use, the templates could have durability (limited but fair amount of uses) and when it hits 0 you would have to repair them with diamonds (just like an elytra, you wouldn't lose it).

Armour trimming is really nice, I like it. but minecraft armour is still too flat I feel like. My idea is to add smithing templates for 3d assets on it, like spikes on the shoulders, and a crest with feathers or horns on the helmet. I would also like the trimming to be possible on weapons and tools.

Templates should be reusable. Cloning the templates using diamonds is just way to expensive for something that is purely cosmetic. The templates should be like the banner patterns so you can use them however many times you want. Also, I may have missed something, but is there a way to remove the trim from your armor right now?

    My ideas are:
-emerald: discount with villagers, the greater the more trims you have on the armor.
-lapis lazuli: Increased chance to get a level 3 enchantment. Increases the more trims you have on your armor.
-Diamond, Iron, Gold, and Emerald: Increases the time you can have a beacon effect outside of its range.
-amethyst: under the logic that amethyst has a certain brightness or you can make a spyglass with it, it allows you to see better in the dark (I'm not so sure about this, since it would take away the use of potions. But it could be an improvement very small to vision) or it can also have a chance to avoid the warden's effect, higher chance if you have more trims on your armor.
-copper: more likely to be struck by lightning XD
-gold: piglins detect you at less range if you have gold trims, however they will still attack you unless you have a gold armor piece on.
netherite: greater protection (not so much)

I feel that for the price these should be adding a modifier to the armor?

Possibly adding a different attribute per material
but the attribute stacks per piece of the same material armor you wear for full effect

But hey could even be made more complex with different armour materials reacting differently for the material of trim like say gold armour plus redstone trim may give a better overall effect compared to say netherite with redstone trim
Making lower tier armour more useful

This could really make the player choose what armour they really want to use rather than just going straight for netherite

That kind of system could really add variety to pvp as players select their armour type and trim to particularly meet their needs of play

Plus since it’s so expensive and or rare it really keeps this a end game modification and keeps the early game progression of iron to gold to diamond etc still intact

These effects don’t need to be very strong just little quirks like a slightly faster walking speed or higher jump or faster weapon recharge or just a resistance to poison or night vision idk the mind could run wild

But for one piece of armour it may be Poison resistance I
Up to poison resistance IV for a full set of say the emerald trim rather than resistance it could even be like thorns but deals a little poison depending on the level

But having multiple different trim materials on will cause them not to stack maybe? It would really be up to how you’d want to deal with it! :D

The way the menu works is weird and inconsistent with the rest of the game, players should be able to input items before and after adding a smithing template to the smithing table. Small gripe, but immediately found myself frustrated with not being able to immediately shift click in armor.

    * Love the changes to enchant glitter.

    * Great balance for challenge/reward. But it can be a bit much for  multiplayer or players on old worlds (like me). Maybe have the wandering traders have a chance to sell the templates. Still incentivized to explore since it would be hard to get the right template via traders, but not impossible for players who don't want to explore 10k+ blocks for, say, strongholds.

+ It does feel adventurous to search the world

+ The diamond recipe is nice but I feel players are going to accidentally use up the template before knowing that it is single use. Maybe make it work on a durability system but never fully breaks like elytra. And no issues with "Too expensive" (maybe it always costs 5 levels + 1 diamond per use). Doesn't need to be clonable if also have wandering trader to make renewable. Full durable temps are stackable, but aren't if put in smith table (like books in ench table) or used up some durability if you want to keep cloning

+ Feels intuitive with trims. Though now netherite upgrades feel weird within the system that it no longer fits in and unintuitive almost. I don't think netherite upgrades still need smith tables

    * The designs are great! Love that they utilize all the minerals. Only weird case is 'RIB' is weirdly darker than the rest of the colors (and I don't like it for that reason)

+ I love the combo of patterns. Always accepting of more, maybe wandering trader exclusives, mineshaft, igloos, etc. Also trimmed horse armor is a must!

This is a great addition! Some interesting things I might add are a black / coal version instead of netherite, and a change of color for the enchantment glint, that matches the chosen material of the trim (: Also I think a second layer for the armors, the same way that player skins have two layers, would be incredible, giving more depth to the armors / trims, while also allowing for more creativity from the resource pack artists (:

finding smithing templates is challenging, but by and large just challenging enough. However Vex & Eye plates have too low odds, given they are in rare structures with not a lot of chests. I think making Eye around a 1/9 chance (similar to desert temples) and making Vex a 1/5 chance (similar to jungle temples) would be good - the stronghold & woodland mansion are incredibly rare, and their current rates mean you are NOT going to find one without searching a ludicrous amount. Alternatively, buff the amount of loot chests in these structures to make it more balanced. The netherite upgrade one is also a bit too rare but i covered that in its own separate feedback article.

maybe it's just me, but the trims only look right in netherite armor, feels weird seing these new textures on the old armor sets, you know
