Let us use glow squid ink to make trims glow. That would be awesome. Also making trim duplication cheaper is pretty necessary, especially for players that don't spend hundreds of hours on one world.

I sort of wish we had the Tuff Golem.  It be neat to alter each of the locations to tuck in a little item holder holding up the Template.  This way you aren't relying on a percentile, you WILL get the high-value item.  Every time you grab the item it could even play a minecraft-version of the "Item Got!" music like in Metroid or Zelda.

I worry mostly about the risk of loosing the high-value item.  Having it destroyed each time used is annoying.

The recipe to duplicate is nice, but the risk of loosing it is still there.  New/Young players not use to all the rules might accidentally destroy it.  Etc. etc.

I get that "loosing your stuff" is a mechanic, but when it's too tough of a loss it can serious put people off the game.

Since there is more than one stronghold, maybe finding templates in library chests would be a neat way to tell a story in quasilore as well as a surefire way to get ahold of a few templates? Possibly with the exclusion of spire and snout armor.

It makes sense some ancients would have mastered the art of smithing to make them.

You could even find armorstands with random pieces of regular and trimmed armor in hallways or special areas with random enchants.

Honestly tho why are we not crafting netherite armor like normal armor with ingots?

The upgrade template look is not fitting. Made us craft netherite armor/tools just like the others instead.

Smithing templates shouldn't be consumed because the duplication is really weird and I think not fit Vanilla. Finding them is already pretty difficult, and using this duplication thing as an excuse to value more the diamonds is just too bad. After all, why do diamonds need to be valuable?

I think that the concept of having to explore different parts of the world to find the templates is excellent as it incentivizes exploration. My concerns with this system lie within the duplication and balance. I think being able to duplicate the templates is excellent, but I don't like the current method. The crafting recipe for templates doesn't follow any logic nor is it intuitive for the player. Diamonds don't correlate with duplication in any other part of the game so it doesn't make sense that it randomly applies here. Also I think the center material piece could be too confusing too. Having the player memorize what material goes with which template could be too much. I know the material correlates with the biome the template is located in, but biomes can be made up of multiple materials and it may be too much to ask players to know them all. My solution to this would be to eliminate the crafting recipe and add a fee of diamonds for whenever the smithing table is used. Then the player doesn't have to keep track of how many templates they have to avoid using their last one (especially on servers). Also it would still increase the value of netherite.

My other problem I had was this mechanic becomes obsolete for lower tier armor. No one is going to want to spend their precious diamonds to change the look of their gold armor. This is where my solution above would come in. The fee would depend what type of armor is being trimmed. Also poor horse armor getting neglected again.

Would be cool if the Warden or Ender Dragon dropped trims. (Maybe Wither or Evoker too? Don't think they need it though)

When it comes to armor trimming personally I think the idea is cool overall but I do have some issues.
    1. I think Coal or Obsidian should replace Netherite as the black trim material. Personally I think having to use one of the most grind necessary item in the game to just cosmetically color your armor is just really a bad call. If I have to choose between adding black trim to diamond vs just upgrading, it doesn't exactly make sense to me. Especially since rn I have to use diamonds to copy the template.
    2. I think the way this is implemented now it very much feels like a more late game feature and that seems backwards to me. I'd love to put patterns on my early game iron armor without using really expensive recourses. Right now, I really don't think adding trim to worse armor makes sense from a gameplay perspective.
    3. I feel like overall you need to make this system cheaper. Right now it feels very anti-casual. Maybe make it more akin to banners? Like maybe we can have some simple stackable patterns to start and then we could find the more complex patterns/designs via chests or mob drops like we do for special banner patterns? Really if I'm fully honest, I think making the armor trimming more akin to the custom banner implementation would fix more problems overall. Maybe not let us use dye per say, but at least make it easier to have neat looking armor in the early game.

    1) Material Specific Templates
    2) Template Durability instead of duplication

Once acquired the empty template could be crafted into an armor specific material using 8 of your chosen armor material (gold ingots, iron ingots, etc.)

    Example Scenario:

    • 1. Find the snout template in bastion remnants
    • 2. Combine a snout template and 8 gold ingots to receive a golden snout template.
    • 3. Place your golden snout template, gold armor, and desired trim material on the smithing table.
    • 4. Craft your golden armor with snout trim.
    • 5. Receive back your original snout template (without the gold)

After a few cycles of this process, the snout template could break, requiring the player to repair it on the crafting table.

The image link below shows just how the progression could work.

Elytra trims? (Could be made using banners?)

With so many options for customizing the appearance it would be nice to have a mirror block. This would improve immersion and add many new build options. It would also be nice if there was a way to make the trims glow using echo shards or glowstone. If the trims do glow, perhaps sneaking would turn off the glow.

If there are horse armor with trims, make them available on zombie horses that spawn on rare events like full moons. People have waited quite a while for zombie horses to be added in survival.

Talking of copper trims I thing there should be a set of copper tools, and make copper more common than iron

We need functionality for these awesome styles!
The materials should give tiny stat increases for example: Redstone-speed, Netherite-durability, gold-piglin protection, iron-more protection….
These are only small buffs and if you have them on multiple armor pieces it stacks

Then the patterns also add an effect to the armor but a more specific one matching the theme of the structure where it was found for example: Ocean Temple: Increased breathing, Woodland Mansion: Chance to dodge hits (because of the totem), Shipwreck: Treasure hunter (find gems in stone and a little luck), End Cities: Enderman respect (they wont feel threatened by your looks)….

This would give you so many options and players would farm many more armor sets for different uses and it would certainly justify the price of the upgrades!

On top of that these stats could be added to the general sets (Leather has a higher speed, Gold is already piglin neutral, netherite already has the high durability maybe it could get some weight so that you are slower (can be reduced by then adding redstone or whatever), iron could give a little more protection and have no weight loss.

This would make players also have other armors for late game instead of just modified netherite armor…

This would be cool adding armour trimming but I would prefer it to be a mod instead because I feel like it would be a bit complicated and it wouldn't really feel like Minecraft to me but it's just my opinion

As from what I've seen, the Smithing Templates are a seemingly uncommon to rare, which would be pretty good for the factor that they're not supposed to be an easy thing to gather, from what I know. They are most certainly a challenge to get. From a bit of extensive searching, you'll get one maybe like 1 out of 10 or so of the chests inside the structures minus the Tide one. It feels a bit rewarding to find something you can utilize to decorate your armor, however I have yet to truly try it in a survival world.

This also begs the question of why would someone need to try to go out of their way to find multiple? The issue I have with the current system of Armor Trim Templates is that they shouldn't really need to be used up. If you use a template on let's say... a new Minecraft building, that building can be redone to near death and back over and over, maybe not consistently without commands, but still pretty consistently. If you utilize a blueprint for something like 3D printing, you don't just throw away that blueprint right afterwards, you store it for later use. I feel this would make the Armor Trim seem more worth while, as well as the upgrade template. I don't quite yet understand how copying the templates works, and again, would need to find out in a survival world, but my point is they shouldn't need to be duplicated or copied. They should be reusable, maybe a certain amount of times if we wanna make it balanced to make up for its rarity in structures.

I think I would be great to be able to use the same material on the corresponding armor, like gold on gold. Why taking that possibility away?

There’s a bug where you can upgrade a netherite-trimmed diamond armor to netherite and it comes out as netherite-trimmed netherite armor

i love armor trims as a concept and in execution, however at the moment they feel faarrrr too rare, me and two friends have been playing a survival world in the most recent snapshot for the last three days and havent found a single one!
weve been exploring plenty, looting chests and such, and the fact that we havent found any astounds us, i even felt like i had to double check i was on the right snapshot! [we are]
were late into the game but not endgame, were late enough to have access to the end if we went and looked for it, but not late enough for full diamond armor

    also, a couple suggestions:
being able to use prismarine crystals would be awesome, they are a crystal after all, same goes for flint
being able to use echo shards would also be really really cool, they do still need more uses as just a music disc really isnt enough
the ability to put these on horse armor is obvious
putting these on elytras would be cool, but i see the problem with the cape elytra things

Some of them, like the woodland mansion, stronghold, or ancient city ones feel way harder to get than others. Maybe there could be a generated room/building in the structures that has them guaranteed, or just make them more commonly spawn.

I feel like instead of having the netherite upgrade just in bastions, you should also be able to craft it using a netherite ingot or two and some netherrack

I'd like to see the trims add a little protection and durability to iron, gold, and chainmail armor, regardless of what trim is used. It doesn't need to make them as good as diamond but it would be nice to have a little more protection and durability so players can utilize these armors more. It costs 24 diamonds to make diamond armor and it will now cost 28 diamonds to add trim to all 4 pieces of armor even if you're trimming iron armor.
Making these armors more useful by trimming them will encourage more player use and allow more variety to armor colors.

A lot of people are talking about why Gold Armor Trims should pacify Piglins. However, if this is implemented, there need to be other incentives for different materials. My solution to this is:

    Netherite Trims: Extra armor points.
Diamond Trims: Less extra armor points.
Iron Trims: A small amount of extra armor points.
Gold Trims: Instead of pacifying Piglins, offer added enchantability.
Copper Trims: Oxidize over time, with Honeycomb used in the Smithing Table to wax the armor.
Quartz Trims: Trigger traps, but in a special way that does not allow Observers or Comparators to detect them.
Amethyst Trims: Play Amethyst sounds whenever a player walks.
Emerald Trims: Add discounts to Villager trading. The more armor trims, the better the discount.
Redstone Trims: Slightly extend potion effects.
Lapis Trims: Can be used in place of 1 Lapis Lazuli in the Enchantment Table.

I really like the armor trims feature. but i feel that it is too expensive to clone the designs. First things first I am more of a casual minecraft player and only have a few hours each week to play the game as such the grind to clone armor patterns and get diamonds is really frustrating because i want to have the customization of the armor trims but to need to spend a diamond leggings worth of diamonds to use a pattern multiple times is too much. Secondly the high diamond cost of the trims makes it infeasible for use in early game. and so the customization despite being an option for adding trims to iron, chainmail, and gold armor sets will not be used by players with these tool sets because it is too expensive. In this way the cost of duplicating the patterns makes the system only allow the individual expression and customization that the 1.20 update focuses on en end game option rather than promoting individual expression throughout people's playtime.

One option that seems like a good idea to reduce the cost of using the trims while still maintaining the patterns as 'these are special items you can get in a similar difficulty by exploring or duplicating' is to make patterns usable multiple times but take durability. (and they could be repaired in an anvil using diamonds?) Durability could even be set to something low such as breaking after 5 armor pieces. this way there is still an incentive to clone and repair but reducing the barrier to use.
