Rock Salt and Salt Ores can generate in mountains, underground and in Salt Deposits. Rock Salt drops more salt than Salt Ores, hence why it generates less frequently than Salt Ores in most biomes.
Salt Flats are a new, rare biome in which Rock Salt and Salt Ores generate more frequently, hence its rarity; additionally, pillars of Rock Salt can also form, and the biome can sometimes generate near oceans.
Salt can be crafted into four salt piles, which can be:
- Crafted with raw meat into jerky, which gives more saturation than raw meat but less than cooked meat, allowing us to make edible foods without cooking it.
- Crafted with wheat into three crackers, a new food source that can also be used to tame/feed parrots (instead of seeds).
- Used on netherrack/dirt/stone to prevent fungi/plants from spreading, so we can have non-planted dirt blocks without resorting to coarse dirt. Salted blocks can be reverted by a hoe.
- Used to dry out ice blocks and wet sponges, "cure" rotten flesh into an edible food source, extinguish fire and temporarily prevent bee stings and cave spider bites.
- Crafted with arrows and a bottle of honey (so the salt would stick) into salt-tipped arrows, which deal more damage than usual — even more damage towards creepers, slimes, endermites, zombified piglins, hoglins and phantoms.
Additionally, salt piles can used to craft compressed salt, nine of which can be used to craft a Block of Compressed Salt; this and Rock Salt can hurt the mobs listed above.
