There's been some recent discussion regarding how diamonds have had no new recipes since 1.6~. Another topic of discussion I've been following lately is Totems of Undying being too powerful for how easy they are to obtain. I propose a step towards solving both in the form of a rework in how totems operate.
When an evoker dies, it will instead drop a deactivated state of the totem that by itself has no function. To access its revival ability you will have to combine it with a diamond (I'll elaborate on this later). Once that's done you will have a functioning totem signified by an altered texture now including the diamond.
Since mending has removed the purpose of getting a diamond set more than once, after you get around a stack of diamonds there's no more purpose to them. By giving it a continuous use it can serve a purpose for late game players again, regain its association with being powerful, and at the same time elliminate some of the over-poweredness of totems as they stand now.
As for the exacts of how it'd work here's a couple of ideas I've come up with:
Combining:
- 1 Totem and one Diamond in a Crafting Table
- 1 Totem in the first slot and 1 Diamond in the second slot of a Smithing Table
- A Toolsmith trade requiring 1 Totem and 1 Diamond
Appearance:
- A simple texture tweak adding a small 4 pixel cavern of sorts in the totem's arms that is replaced with light blue indicating a diamond after activation
