I think that gold is largely under-utilized in Minecraft. It's not a super great armor and the tools die out quick. I think 1 cool and unique thing to do would be the addition of gilded armors, maybe even tools. For example you could use a smiting table to add gold to pre-existing armor pieces. This would both look cool imo and it could even have a purpose in game. Gilded armor could have hit points taken away in armor health, but have the ability to have more enchantments; such as more than 1 type of protection or having conflicting enchantments on the same piece. As for gilded tools they could be slightly less durable than their regular counterparts, but mine quicker like gold does. The same enchantment principle could also apply to swords, such as having sharpness and smite on the same sword. In all I think that players would appreciate this as a way to utilize something already in the game and another way to make better tools and armor without having to add a new ore and restructure the metal value system.
