This would not be a good idea, as chains are more expensive then iron bars.

(Whoever first commented) But it would, chains are more expensive than iron bars? yes, but, the crafting recipe for iron armor requires iron bars as it would make sense for literal chains to be able to craft chainmail armor, "CHAIN" mail armor.

Chainmail armor takes chains, pretty obvious, if the recipe was added, sure it would be more expensive, but at least it would be able to be crafted, where currently you can't, pretty obvious, but what is even more confusing is the current recipe, it already only has the ability to be crafted with the thing that cannot be obtained naturally, the "Fire" item, which can only be obtained by commands, instead of using chains for what it would make the most sense to use them for, they used fire, which would make even less sense in this next sentence. Fire, can be used to melt iron (real life), which can be used to craft into chains, which doesn't make sense due to the fact that chains (currently not able to craft chainmail just yet, as stated before), instead of fire, make chainmail, so how would fire, without iron, just fire, in the crafting recipe, convert to chainmail, instead of the option making the most sense, chains, for chainmail.
