Crafted from wood planks, string and sticks.

Shift-Rightclicking would bring up a GUI allowing the player to crudely arrange notes around, giving the options to cancel or save the current melody. Once a melody is saved, the item will appear enchanted in the Inventory, and will play the melody once Rightclicked. Rightclicking a Lute without a saved melody will produce out of tune noises as if the player is unable to properly play the instrument.

Additionally, unique Lutes that spawn as loot only and provide different sounds could be a possibility. (For example, an End City exclusive Ender Lute whose notes sound like synths)
