In the new 1.20 update, we'll be focusing on Storytelling and expression. With this in mind, we could possibly take the expression part of the spectrum and introduce new crystals in the process. In Minecraft, cave-diving has been made less relevant with the introduction of certain structures, so to change this, 3 new crystals (Gemstones) could be added, spawning rarely and below Y=0. They'd be used to make vanity items, as well as be embedded into swords, pickaxes, and chestplates (be it iron, Gold, diamond or netherite) in a smithing table.
Rubies - the iconic red gem from the older Minecraft days, these gems could be crafted with 5 iron or 5 gold to make a fancy crown, a vanity item that gives 1 defense point, but looks splendid. It can also be crafted into emeralds using 4 of them and 4 green dye (sneaky!)
Sapphire - The popular primary color, not to be confused for cyan diamonds, these can also be used for crowns, but may also be used to power a beacon or be crafted into a glass ring (given you have 4 glass blocks), which reflects nearby fireballs when they're right-clicked, but has low durability.
Topaz - This yellow gemstone scares creepers when held, due to the familiar color (meow). It can be crafted into a crown or be made into a hangable "charm" with a mob head, which scares away that respective mob within an 8 block radius.
Amethyst & emeralds - We already have these items, but yes, these could count as gemstones, hence having crowns and being able to be embedded.
