The campfire could be able to smelt more than just food. This would emulate more real uses of a campfire, and possibly give it a touch of a bygone era of more primitive means.
Granted that many items would not make sense to smelt on a small campfire due to temperature issues (smelting raw iron into iron ingots is implausible), but some would.
Smelting bricks from clay balls would be a nice touch, allowing for a rustic feel of do-it-yourself (and historically, clay pots were made and smelted on campfires). Smelting clay bricks into terracota might seem a bit far-fetched, but worth considering.
Same with smelting cactus and sea pickle into their respective dyes. Not sure about drying out the sponge.
Being able to salvage some iron or gold nuggets from surplus armor might come in handy too.
