functional minecarts without rails

Minecarts let you make roller coasters and that stuff, but otherwise they're kind of boring, because you can't go anywhere you like without having to place rails. They also aren't very fast.

 

We have horses, but horses don't give that much excitement, and when stop riding a horse, they could escape if you don't lead them.

 

I know Minecarts that move without the use of rails would feel like cars and wouldn't fit minecraft,

but I atleast want a method of transportation with something that has wheels.

  Minecarts are specifically a rolling mechanism for railways. They were based off real-world minecarts, so of course they only work on rails. They shouldn't function without them, it makes no sense.
