The fletching table could be used to construct arrows with special effects or utilizing alternative materials. The basic components of flint, stick, and feather could each be replaceable and would affect the damage, range, or accuracy/eccentricity of the arrow in flight. Right now there is not really a suitable alternative to feathers for flight stabilization, but as more types of birds are added different types of feathers could become available. Perhaps paper could be crafted into a 'stiff' version as a feather alternative. Bamboo could be an alternative to sticks, which (for example) might increase the range but the arrow is unrecoverable. Iron and perhaps other materials could be crafted into arrowheads, increasing damage but reducing range and perhaps accuracy. The 'payload' could also be replaced with special effects items which do no projectile damage, such as a fire charge that ignites what it hits (including creepers). A cobweb and slime payload might create a temporary 3x3 cube of cobwebs where it hits, slowing down mobs. A blue ice payload might chill enemies. An arrow with lead could lasso a mob or perhaps catch a falling one, or bind it to prevent it from attacking. An arrow with chain might create a temporary 'tightrope' to walk upon. An arrow with ink might blind an enemy. An arrow with redstone might power the block it lodges in until it despawns or is collected.
