Firstly, the lead does not detach from the animal when you attach it to a fence.  It should similarly remain attached to animal when detaching from fence.

Secondly, the lead should be self-attachable to the player by rightclicking in the air with a lead in hand.  This could imply a perception of suicide, but given that we can easily do so with every single form of damage or damage-dealing debuff currently in-game I feel this could be easily accounted for by making it a point to clearly show the lead attachment on the player as at the waist or some other indicator (similar to the pumpkin-head overlay, perhaps the player shows with a harness around themselves)

This would then give us a Mountain-related use for fence posts (aka pitons) to enhance both the parkour communities as well as providing a fun way to ascend the new-gen mountainsides full of goats and powdered snow.
