I'm not sure about you but I am sick of crashing and falling when trying to land on a one block pillar.
Therefore, I took reference from the game the Elytra took inspiration from for its mechanics. In Super Mario 64, If you hit a wall at a high enough point near the top and said top of the wall is free to air with a floor attached. Mario will grab the ledge and hang there. When pressing A, he will pull himself up. If Z is pressed while hanging, he will let go and drop. Sure, its doesn't happen when he's flying but then again, Super Mario 64 doesn't have firework rockets for Wingcap boosting either.
In Minecraft, this would be accomplished by colliding with a block that is a ceiling at the top of a wall, (preferably the central area of the block). When still up against said block, pressing [JUMP] will cease flight as usual but the player will now be frozen in place up against the block. This can only be done with blocks which have enough space for the player to stand upon them without taking suffocation damage (for example: top trapdoor on the second air block, water, lava, powdered snow, air, etc.) If blocks are in the way, its not possible to ledge grab or hang there. However, if there is enough space to house the player above the block hung off of, the player can pull themselves up with [JUMP] or drop with [SNEAK]
