Minecarts aren't really practical outside of technical builds, which only a minority of the community is very proficient in. As a transport method, they're really useless now because of Elytra (except for some mob transport, but even then that's short term and will be taken down once finished most likely). It would be cool for Minecart tracks to have some good use to the everyday Minecrafter.
We could look to trains in real life for inspiration. Historically they carried large amounts of freight. Trains are also carriages linked together.
There's a use for the large scale transport of materials - large builds etc. Shulker boxes sort of do this, but trains could be even better.
Minecart trains could be done by linking different minecarts together;
Furnace Minecart = Engine at the front
Followed by a normal minecart so a player can feed it coal
Followed by any sequence of other minecarts except the furnace one.
There can be a max length, e.g. of 12, like pistons pushing blocks has that limit.
There could also be upgrades to minecart rails - add junctions etc. I'm no train nerd though.
Doing something with minecarts would help with large scale inventory management. A step up from shulker boxes, can be made to work with technical Minecraft, and will make minecarts practical for everyone.
