This may be quite a large change but I believe it would add alot of adventure to the early nights of minecraft. The idea is this, the player must forego sleep for 30 nights straight. during this period phantoms will spawn each night in larger numbers until night 30 where a slightly larger boss phantom will spawn along with a raid like health bar. Upon defeating the boss phantom you get the drop of the phantom spine/backbone (could be called phantom scales).
This would act as an early game challenge that the player actively decides to take part in. At anytime the player can opt out of the event by going to bed but this means their progress is lost and they must stay awake another 30 nights to have another chance at defeating the boss.
The player then adds the phantom scales/spine to their chestplate in a crafting/smithing table and the texture of the back of the chestplate is updated to show the scales/spine. This adds an inventory slot much like the offhand in which a leather backpack can be placed. (The recipe for the backpack and the amount of space it contains can be altered to keep it balanced. perhaps an enchant with different levels could increase the space) The backpack can't be removed unless it is completely empty.
Additionally, since most all players decide to lose their chestplate in favour of an elytra late game, the scales/spine on the chestplate could also allow an elytra to be attached instead of a backpack. Allowing the player to choose travel speed or capacity
