There have been changes that encourage armor diversification based on situations (ex leather boots and powdered snow). I believe this is a really good concept to develop further.
Gold gear should have access to higher enchantment levels(ex.efficency 6) at the cost of their low durability.
Iron gear should be cheaper to enchant and repair to enhance early game experience or for players whole recently lost more expensive gear.
Chainmail can have higher physical damage resistance
Those wearing no gear or mostly leather should move slightly faster (maybe mount speed too). Leather enchanted gear shouldnt glow either (since they can be dyed).
Diamond gear should remain unchanged as it often is the standard for players and the boosts to damage, durability, and burning via netherite gives both types of gear their niche.
Additionally material-specific enchantments can also give each gear type more specific niches. Ex. An enchantment that lets stone tools ignore some armor enchantments (blunt force damage) or another that lets wood pickaxes break all blocks at a fixed speed that ignores block type.
Of course these are just some ideas, but giving other tool/armor types some kind of differential beneficial utility from diamond and netherite would encourage use of forgotten variants especially gold/stone/chainmail.
