The bard is a new villager. The bard’s occupation block is the jukebox, which generates in a colorful tent in some villages.
At lower levels, the bard trades bread, feathers, etc. At mid tiers a bard might sell you a note block for emeralds. At higher levels, the bard sells music discs/goathorns.
The bard has an extra-special feature that sets it apart from other villagers. If you toss the bard an emerald (as you might toss a piglin some gold), they will play you music on their instrument (more on this below). The bard has several new songs in their repertoire and will choose one randomly each time you toss an emerald at it. The bard is quite talented, and as such, their music has a slight healing effect. Each emerald that you toss at the bard will heal you by two hearts (although the bard will not start a new song until they are done playing their current one).
Bards from different biomes play different instruments. They can be seen carrying this instrument on their model and upon playing, their animation will show this instrument. The villagers and their corresponding instruments are as follows:
Plains: lute
Desert: ney (Egyptian flute)
Savanna: abu (wind instrument from Kenya)
Taiga: balalaika (Russian 3-string guitar)
Snow: tautirut (bowed instrument used by the Inuit)
The music the bards play is inspired by the music that their instrument might traditionally perform. Thusly, each type of bard has its own diverse set of pieces that it can play and sound it can create.
