Puzzle Boxes would be items found in various generated structures. Upon right-clicking, players would open up a user-interface displaying a puzzle. Upon completion of the puzzle, the Puzzle Box is replaced by a prize.
I personally envision the puzzle as a sliding-block puzzle, in which the Player slides blocks of varying length to clear a path so that a color-designated block may reach a marked location, but I don't think the type of puzzle matters so long as it can be made to make Players think.
Puzzles Boxes could have three difficulty levels, with higher levels yielding better loot.
Example Loot Table (By no means a definitive draft):
Easy - Music Disc, Saddle, Emerald, Compass, Clock, Golden Carrot
Normal - Enchanted Book, Golden Apple, Diamond, Horse Armor, Name Tag
Hard - Treasure Enchantment, Enchanted Golden Apple, Tools & Armor
Players might occasionally find Cursed Puzzle Boxes.
Puzzle Boxes with Binding have their pieces revert to their original places if the Player closes the UI without completing the puzzle.
Puzzle Boxes with Vanishing disappear if the Player fails to complete the puzzle within a certain number of moves determined by the Puzzle Box's difficulty level. Much like tools & armor, it will also vanish from the Player's inventory upon dying.
Why should Puzzle Boxes be added?
I think it adds a dash of mystery to the game while also expanding on the game's treasure-hunting experience. And puzzles are fun.
