In Minecraft there are 4 types of damage: fire, explosions, projectiles and "everything else"; these types correspond to the 4 Protection types, but the "everything else" category is more than 60% of all incoming damage, and Protection blocks 64% of it plus any other damage type. So I think there should be more damage types, which their own unique Protection type
Fire Damage
Fire damage would be composed by the base damage and the Burning; the Burning would be applied when we are on fire, and the damage dealt increases every second we stay on fire; this would mean that the longer we burn, the worse it's going to get
Blast Damage
It should stay as now, but explosions should add velocity to entities, and when an entity has certain speed and hits a wall, it gets a lot of damage, like fall damage, but not covered by Feather Falling
Projectile damage
Projectile should pierce armor, reducing it's effectiveness against them, depending on their damage: per unit of damage, 4% of armor protection gets reduced: Projectile Prot would reduce that
Magic damage
Magic damage would have a chance of applying Corrosion; this state would slowly damage the armor
Kinetik Damage
Damage from fireworks, anvils, dripstone, falling etc.
Melee Damage
Damage dealt by entities in melee combat
General damage
Cactus, berry bushes, powder snow, drowning etc
Each damage would have its owne protection type (except general damage), that would block it, and offers some more buffs, while Protection would block all without buffs
