When I heard about the Allay, there were a couple of usage cases that occurred to me.
The Allay will be used to retrieve items that are out of reach of the player, or inconvenient to reach. i.e: Items that are (A) surrounded by hostile mobs or (B) fell a long way down while building high up.
(It did not occur to me that the primary usage would end up being to gather up items the player could easily gather anyway and place them into the already often overcrowded player inventory).
It fulfills usage (A), but with its current search radius, it lacks fails at hypothetical usage (B). In caves and cliffs, the rendering of the distance fog was changed to a cylinder instead of a sphere to better show the verticality of mountains.
Thinking about this change made me think of the Allay and how useful it would be for it to search for items a much longer vertical distance from the player by having a cylindrical search area. (This would primarily extend downward, as I can't imagine many reasons why the Allay would need to look for items some distance above the player Y-value).
