I think it's possible to fix scaffolding's flaws while making use of its current limitations in the form of incomplete pillars.
For clarity, tops are the top of the pillar and supports are the legs of the pillar.
- At the overhang limit scaffolding instead extends its legs down, forming an incomplete pillar.
- These pillars cannot be traveled through up or down.
- Breaking either the top or supports breaks the entire pillar.
- Due to their weaker nature, they break alongside supporting scaffolding.
- Supports can be made into tops if scaffolding is placed there or through it.
- Pressing use while holding shift on the side of scaffolding prioritizes replacing any supports below (from top to bottom).
These would offer players the ability to cover larger areas whilst taking away the unique properties scaffolding has, but also allowing their use to be restored if players have the resources to do so. It can even combat the ability to access blocks below the player, as scaffolding would prioritize construction downwards if there is a support to replace.
