Could they have a use beside ambience? Food is off the list, but being in jars as a light source isn't. Neither is having a special drop.

I seriously don't get why they scrapped fireflies altogether instead of just.. making it so frogs don't eat them. Because their concern was that in real life, fireflies are poisonous to frogs.

Minecraft has a good handful of useless ambient mobs. Bats, polar bears, and pandas do absolutely nothing but they add to the environment by simply existing. I think it'd be fine for fireflies to exist just for ambience.

As for items- I doubt they will add a firefly jar as a decoration block, purely because Mojang is pretty concerned with their effect on reality. Minecraft is a game played by children, so I imagine their concern would be that those children would try and make their own firefly jars.

Maybe they could drop something like glowstone dust, or another new ingredient that could be used to craft a new light fixture, something similar to the lanterns. Maybe you could use it to craft something like fairy lights, that would be hung up similarly to vines.

Ok but like getting rid of them so kids don’t feed them to their frogs??? You can just make it so frogs don’t eat them in the game or if they kept that it’s the kids fault for killing their frog because they did something they saw in a video game

I found it ridiculous that zombies and skeletons can kill endangered sea turtles and destroy their eggs by "teaching children" they can stomp on turtle eggs and kill them, but lets not let imaginary frogs eat imaginary fireflies.  I agree, all they had to do was not have the frogs eat them.  It makes no sense to take them out of the game when so many were looking forward to the magical ambience that they would have brought to the game-play.  When you can kill cats, dogs, and all the other wildlife..even your best friend if PVP is enabled, it makes no sense to me how anyone would complain about fireflies.  It's a game!

People need to understand that they likely weren't added because there was no time. The whole point was for how froglights would be made. The change meant fireflies weren't high priority anymore. There was a deadline for 1.19's release date. Maybe if Mojang had like another half a year to work on the update, they could've had the time needed to work on adding fireflies, because it wouldn't be easy but take several iterations/tests of how they would exist and function. There's many things to consider when adding new content. They're well aware of the demand and possible uses.

It would be nice to finally see fireflies in the game as little pixels that create atmosphere, perhaps in the fog. It would also be nice to have more flora (pumpkins, mushrooms and pale flowers) and fauna (evil rabbits with red eyes, hostile bats). A specific dungeon would really be the best.
