Enchanting was first introduced into Minecraft all the way back in 1.0.0. Since then, it has only received two significant updates, the first being the ability to enchant books, added in 1.4.6. Without this update we wouldn't be able to trade with villagers for enchanted books, which is how the vast majority of Minecraft players obtain the enchantments that are put on their tools, weapons and armour. The second update of significance is 1.8, the 'Bountiful Update'. Aside from the many other features of this update, it added on to the enchanting game mechanic by overhauling it so that enchanting required a secondary cost, Lapis.
Since these updates, enchanting has grown stale. It's rarely used and much more often than not, players will opt to simply trade for enchanted books. I believe that enchanting should be overhauled to be more useful to players. Here are some features I believe would be good additions:
- Candles influence enchanting. The 'Quark Oddities' mod handled this well; certain coloured candles placed & lit (up to a maximum of 4) could influence what enchantments are gotten.
- More bookshelves. The addition of more bookshelves would not only be a complimentary addition for builders, but they could also influence enchantments gotten.
- More enchantments & curses. There are currently 36/35 enchantments and only 2 curses. Simply put, more are needed. However, to encourage the use of manual enchanting, some enchantments should be made exclusive to the enchanting table.
