when making large maps most minecraft game developers fly far away and place different levels or sections of the map out of sight, this not only makes it harder to find levels later on, but also wastes memory, those loaded chunks typically do not get deleted because the tools to delete chunks either can only do region outside of a rectangle or are to tedious, so many maps have wasted chunks.
what I believe to be the solution is, a block that renders the sky texture on top of the render stack so that the sky, sun, moon, stars, and void/nether/end etc... will be rendered in however the ground will not be, these blocks can be places between builds so from a player perspective it would hide the other levels of the map.
this would allow map makers to build maps that are tighter together allowing for better organization, less memory, nicer looking maps, and creative uses, a block like this would work great for different portal designs magic effects, invisible mazes, parkour maps etc..
I believe the general idea to be a really good one the details dont matter as much, could allow players to walk through the block, or it could be solid, or better yet have both, a portal would need pass through and some maps would need solid.
