Fireflies were removed from the Wild Update after being deemed "poisonous to frogs" and unfit for the update, so we'll have to wait and see what Mojang has in store for them later on down the line. I propose a possible use for them, however, which is similar to many suggestions but has a unique twist that would tie it into pre-existing features a little more nicely.
I am of course talking about Lantern Cages.
The idea behind the Lantern Cage is that it would be crafted with 8 iron nuggets on a Crafting Table, in the same way you would make a Lantern or Soul Lantern minus the torch in the middle. This would give you an empty Lantern Cage which could either be crafted together with a Torch or Campfire (or the respective soul variants) to create the pre-existing Lantern and Soul Lantern.
Where fireflies would come into play is having the ability to click on them using an empty Lantern Cage, which would fill it with fireflies that would produce a small animated particle that flies around inside the cage.
One more interesting use case for this block could be that, since you could place it down while it's empty, it would be a neat quality of life function if you could simply interact with it with a torch to ignite it without having to craft the items together, also consuming the torch (or soul torch) in the process.
Just a rather small block suggestion, but one that could give a refreshing revamp to the pre-existing lanterns!
