Firefly’s need to be implemented in a way that doesn’t affect players performance. First of all, it has been suggested to make firefly’s a sort of particle effect rather than a mob to reduce the lag it would induce. This is a great idea, however, we need to make sure that they would still be interactive. By allowing players to use bottles to catch them much like the dragons breath effect, you could gain the usefulness of a mob and the visuals of an effect. Secondly, Firefly’s like a wet, damp environment, areas with the absence of bright lights, and places with dense brush and tall grass. To simulate this, Firefly’s should come at after a day of rain, and spawn only in areas which are sufficiently dark and full of foliage. This would make it so that the amount of Firefly effects are limited, but still accessible to the player, as well as incorporating Minecraft’s seldom used weather system. To make fireflies in a bottle to be an useful block, I would suggest making them a light source which changes brightness level dependent on the time of day. At daytime they give off no light at all, but during the afternoon they will start to glow, increasing in brightness as the day turns into night, and decreasing when midnight has passed. This would provide people with a new, dynamic option for lighting.
