The Echo Core will be a new block that can be found in a chest in the center of each ancient city. The Echo Core is able to prevent all mob spawning (excluding wardens) in it's range, without the use of lights or other spawn proofing methods. Before you think this is too over powered, there are some important details to note.
The Echo Core will start off with a very short range. The player will be able to right click the Echo Core with Echo Shards, spending the shards in order to increase the range. I believe that due to only one Echo Core generating in each ancient city, which isn't too common of a structure, it should have a large maximum range. Though of course it should take a lot of Echo Shards to reach that point. Due to the expense of leveling up this block, I believe that when the block is mined and replaced, it should retain it's area of affect rather than resetting.
There should also be a way to determine if the core will completely spawn proof a build. If the player walks on the Echo Core, it will give the darkness affect to the player until they exit the core's area of affect. Perhaps this should be a slightly less dark version of the affect, just to prevent sculk shriekers from being seen as less useful.
This block would lead to builders and adventurers being motivated to explore the ancient cities. Builders get spawn proofing that allows for dark atmospheres. Adventurers get an expensive, yet easy to use method of assuring a cave they're exploring is safe.
