Recently in 1.19 snapshots and betas, the warden has gained a new ability that allows it to instantly kill the player if he/she is out of reach. I think this a bad and lazy solution to the problem of players building up or digging down to avoid the warden, and ruins the point of a horror based mob. It doesn’t even make sense in the first place, as if the warden has this ability, wouldn’t it always use that rather than chasing the player? A better Idea is to have the warden begin to climb up walls when the player is above it, dig down if bellow, and through walls if the path is blocked. This makes sense, considering that climbing and digging is part of its spawn animation. It would also be very terrifying to players to see the warden do this, and I believe thats the point. Getting blasted by a lazer would just be boring and anticlimactic, causing frustration rather than fear. As a side note, the warden should not be slowed down by liquids (water and lava). EDIT: A good point I forgot to mention is that the ranged attack punishes players for trying to think outside the box in an unfair way, something I feel goes against one of Minecraft’s core aspects: the player’s freedom to be creative. Rather than just instantly killing the player because they tried to do things differently from what is intended, a scenario that allows the player to react and change tactics should be used instead.
