I believe the enchanting system should be reworked because:
- Random enchantment selection makes for boring gameplay. In the early-mid game, fortune, looting ... are very important for optimal progression. Many people just re-roll enchantments until they get what they need. This is tedious and increases the need for exp grinding
- Later in the game, players often use villagers to get enchanted books without randomness. Villagers are the best source of so many items, making them quite OP. This issue could be reduced if we could pick the enchantments we want without the need for villagers
- Adding any new enchantment available in the enchanting table makes any other enchantment harder to get
- Low level enchantments become obsolete very quickly, it is often better to save the exp.
My idea: bookshelves become containers and can hold 3 enchanted books. A table surrounded by empty bookshelves can produce a limited set of enchantments and up to a certain level. Acquiring more and better enchantments requires finding enchanted books in the world and adding them to the bookshelves. The table allows picking the exact enchantments you want, among the base enchantments and the books in the bookshelves. The amount of exp required depends on the material of the item being enchanted and number/power of enchantments
With such a system, players could hunt for books so they can upgrade their enchantment setup. Lower level enchantments become more useful because high levels ones are hard to get
