Back in Beta 1.9 Pre2, there was a fully functional but unused brewing system the preceded the brewing stand we all know today. A year or two ago, the user Sl1mJ1m made a mod to make the system work, simply by assigning an ID and crafting recipe to the implemented but inaccessible cauldron block. In this old system, various potion-related items can be inserted into a cauldron that has been filled with water, and taken out with a glass bottle to receive a potion, with the effect(s) corresponding to the inserted items. Unlike the modern brewing system, this system was incredibly open-ended, with any combination of potion ingredients in any order giving a potion, though they may have mixed effects, leading to potions with upsides and downsides, different from most of today's options, (save Potion of the Turtle Master) a much more balanced approach to having something so easily accessible. Balancing of this system would probably need to be completely redone, as a single sugar item gives the player a Potion of Healing, which is far too simple for such a powerful item. Another minor aspect of this old brewing system was the potions' names, including unusual adjectives such as Bungling Potion, Milky Potion, and Debonair Potion. These potion names would be assigned with little regard for what effects they applied, and a new naming system, perhaps a combination of adjectives for more variety, might be better for uniqueness, and maybe the potion cauldron could interact with dispensers.
