Since it's addition in 0.0.14a, Gravel only got bug fixes, textures changes or WorldGen placement changes, while it's potential as the "cobblier" Cobblestone was overlooked.
Indeed, I believe that Gravel is part of the Stone > Cobblestone chain, and for that reason, it should be craftable/obtainable by:
Using a Stonecutter, transforming Cobblestone into one or two blocks of Gravel.
And/Or by
Making an anvil fall onto cobblestone, transforming it into gravel. Also allowing the making of a contraption consisting of a Cobblestone generator and a Pistons/Slimeblocks/Anvil contraption, making an anvil fall on the generated Cobblestone blocks, transforming them into Gravel blocks continuously.
But being able to craft/obtain that much Gravel would be useless if there wasn't any new uses for it, that is why I think new variants of the Gravel blocks should appear, like Andesite, Diorite, Granite and Blackstone Gravel blocks, that could be found in the same places as their respective stone variants but also obtainable through the methods above.
Some Rooted and or Mossy variants of each of those could also be a great addition in the Wild update, Rooted Gravel blocks, not affected by gravity and craftable using Mangrove roots or obtainable by growing a Mangrove tree over Gravel blocks, and Mossy Gravel blocks, craftable using moss or vines with Gravel blocks on a Crafting Table.
