Personally I've felt that minecraft has a ton of underwhelming uses for its magic, potions are a bit underwhelming overall, tipped arrows are too hard to obtain in java. The enchanting table can make add so much to armor but it generally feels mundane. I think minecraft could easily add magic to the game and it not actually feel out of place, we already have one such item in the totem of undying. I think minecraft should add magic in the form of items, perhaps made in a unique crafting system like a new brewing stand, perhaps it uses something like emeralds to put effects into totems. When I say magic tho, I don't just mean add lightning flinging and fireball hurling, that's boring. I think minecraft would work great with utility magic. Maybe a totem can change the weather, maybe another one can create temporary blocks that vanish after a few seconds. I could see another being a more accurate way to teleport, perhaps an effect that creates a burst of knockback around you, and if you still want combat magic we have a basis for it in the evoker. Summon up a ghostly wolf for a time, or a line of thorns that lash out then disappear, the possibilities are endless. I'd much prefer utility over combat but both can work and not be over powered, maybe the totems take a few seconds to activate like charging a bow. This is how I feel we could have minecrafty magic
