This is a concept for what the portal in the deep dark will do.
You light the portal by filling it with "Sculk Spores", these spawn in the portal, ancient city chests, and from sculk catalysts.
The dimension will be under bedrock. Imagine you are an ant crawling through tall grass. The 'grass' is made from "Sculk Calluses" and reaches all the way to the bedrock ceiling. The grass from a top down view looks like a page with a bunch of squiggly lines on it. The floor will have holes. Under the floor there will be upside down ‘grass’, you can do parkour there and around the middle between the floor and roof. "Sculk Vines" can damage you.
The longer you spend in the dimension the more your "Sculk Detection Bar” will fill up. It will fill faster the lower on health you are, and when you take damage. When it reaches max tons of a type of sculk charge will spawn, this charge will travel up along the ‘grass’ or floor or anything and launch out a “Sentinel” this will be a creature that will hunt you down and can move faster than the player. Once the detection bar is full they will also spawn from “Sculk Nodes”. There will "Withered Sculk" block that creates zone where your sculk detection bar decreases. Wither sculk can be picked up and moved.
The goal of the dimension is to find the "Core of the Wild". This will spawn in a special block that will regrow it after an extremely long time. With this item you can shift between the wild dimension and the overworld. It has durability.
