An environmental hazard timer would change everything.
Here is how that mechanic would shake out in practice:
The Heat/Corrosion Bar: Similar to the freezing visual effect in powder snow, your screen could start vignetting with heat waves, nether-spores, or ash as a corruption meter fills up over 20 minutes (one full Minecraft day).
The Sickness Phase: Once the bar maxes out, you start taking steady ticks of damage—maybe a new status effect like "Nether Decay" or "Withered Lung" that bypasses standard armor protection.
The Overworld Tether Potion: Crafting a "Purifying Draught" or "Tether Tonic" (maybe using Chorus Fruit, Glow Berries, or a new Overworld flora strain) would become mandatory expedition prep. Drinking it would either reset your exposure timer or temporarily purge the infection long enough to let you step back through a portal.
Redstone & Base Building Impact: It would turn Nether highway building and Piglin bartering into high-stakes time trials, forcing players to build sealed "clean rooms" or safe havens anchored with specific Overworld blocks (like Sculk or Crying Obsidian) to vent the toxicity.
It would definitely piss off players who build massive megastructures in the Nether, but for a survival challenge, it would turn the Dimension into a true hazard zone where every minute counts.
