I would combine a "locator map" with a "book and quill" into a "navigation map".
Allow the user to mark their current coordinates ( Putting a "mark on the map" that would "pin" the current X,Y,Z address on the map. Bonus to use a colored marker (visually on the map), and extra bonus for a short label / string to name the location too. )
Adding text pages (to the map) that would allow them to have a corresponding colored marker and a line or two of text for that marker. So you could "read the back of the map" to find things you marked too. ( "village with good book trades", etc..)
You could even "unlock new markers" as you find new areas in the world. ( villages, broken/whole nether portals, ship wrecks, buried treasure, mine-shafts, trial chambers, sulfur springs, player created nether portals, etc...)
You select a marker on the map, and a get a "dot on the coordinates" visually guiding you to that location. ( in X, Y and Z ) Similar to the multi player "dot on the horizon" that marks other players. Only you can "select" a marker on the map and go to that x,y,z block. ( right left and up down indication of direction )
I think of it like "writing on the back of the map" and "putting pins in a map on the wall". With the added feature of being able to find your way back to those locations visually later.
Players could create lines of markers to "run between points of interest" to make "paths" tor run from A to B as well.
